The Italian translation of this magnificent dolomite rock formation is five towers. Although there are several towers, these form the grouping, and each has own name. They area are located in the province of Belluno, Italy, in the southwest area of the valley of Cortina d’Ampezzo. During World War I, the area was the stage for conflict between the Italian and Austrian-Hungarian troops. War shelters which were built by the Italian army are still present. While the towers are very popular among rock climbers with various levels of skills, and the area also attracts hikers; and in the winter, snow skiers.
